AUS/NZ Social Media Sport Ladder: Where Does Your Team Stand?

Here is a quick run down of the social media standings (as of January 7th 2016) across three social platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) for 84 Australian and New Zealand teams across eight sporting leagues (AFL, NRL, BBL, A-League, NBL, AIHL, ABL and Super Rugby)

Some notes:

• The following social media audit was conducted from 6pm Wednesday 6th January until 8am Thursday 7th January, 2016. 
• The numbers were collated across two, three hour collection periods on the Wednesday night and Thursday morning. 
• Green represents the leader in each league
• Dark blue represents the leader in each league on Facebook.
• Blue represents the leader in each league on Twitter.
• Red represents the leader in each league on Instagram.
• Green at the far right of the column represents the team with the most followers for that league across the three social media platforms. 
• Numbers have since gone up for every team slightly however there is no way to accurately collate every team’s total followers as these are changing on every second. 
• There are no women’s teams represented here as I will be doing a separate AUS/NZ women’s sport social media post next week. 

Most Followed Sports League 

The first table here represents the total number of followers across social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) with the NRL slightly ahead of the AFL but also with the BBL catching up quickly. 

Most Followers Per League

Top 20 Followed AUS/NZ Sporting Teams 

This next table represents the top 20 teams for followers (across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) with the Sydney Sixers BBL team leading the way.

• All eight BBL teams feature in the top 20 teams.
• Five NRL and AFL teams feature while two Super Rugby teams also make the top 20 followers list.

AFL

AFL Notes:

1. Collingwood Magpies lead with 509, 312 followers.
2. Collingwood also dominate across the three social media platforms. 
3. Total followers in AFL across these three social media platforms: 5,488,131

NRL

NRL Notes:

1. Brisbane Broncos lead with 748,410 total followers
2. Brisbane dominate Facebook.
3. Souths and NZ Warriors both had around 75,800 followers on Twitter as of Thursday morning however as you cannot tell the exact number, 75,800 has been taken as the base number. Can someone tell me who leads here?
4. Souths lead on Instagram with 94,800 followers
5. Total followers in NRL across these three social media platforms: 5,589,197 

BBL

BBL Notes:

1. Sydney Sixers have a whopping 865,475 followers across all social media with a massive 760,975 alone on Facebook.
2. Sydney Sixers are the Australia/NZ team with the most followers across these three social media platforms. 
3. The BBL teams dominate the top 20 teams across these leagues with all 8 teams featuring in the top 20 across these three social media platforms. 
4. Melbourne Stars lead on both Twitter and Instagram here. 
5. Total followers in BBL across these three social media platforms: 4,112,031

Super Rugby

Super Rugby Notes:

1. I have included the NZ teams as it’s only fair if Wellington Phoenix and NZ Warriors are included in the A-League and NRL lists respectively. 
2. Canterbury Crusaders lead across all social media with a total of 455,904
3. Total followers in Super Rugby (AUS/NZ teams only) across these three social media platforms: 2,496,618

A-LEAGUE

A-League Notes:

1. Melbourne Victory dominate with 289,092 followers and lead on Facebook and Instagram.
2. Sydney FC and Melbourne City are close though with 245, 903 and 217,878 followers respectively.
3. WSW lead on Twitter with 68,000 followers.
4. Total followers in A-League across these three social media platforms: 1,602,755

NBL

NBL Notes:

1. Perth Wildcats lead across all social media platforms with 136,370 followers combined. 
2. Total followers in NBL across these three social media platforms: 469,399

ABL

ABL Notes:

1. Canberra Cavalry lead the ABL here with 28,708 and with 17,400 on Twitter
2. Brisbane dominate Facebook while Perth heat up Instagram
3. Total followers in ABL across these three social media platforms: 110,746 

AIHL

AIHL Notes:

1. Melbourne Mustangs lead the way in the AIHL with 15,750 followers and dominate across these three social media platforms.
2. Total followers in AIHL across these three social media platforms: 69,070
